THE TRUST WORTH TOUR ORGANIZER
FRANCIS MAKALA is the founder of Jipe trekking & safaris company! based in Moshi - Kilimanjaro Tanzania. Moshi is a small developing town Located at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. Francis arranges eco-cultural trips around Moshi - Arusha and some other regions of Tanzania, but Francis is more than just a tour guide. He is the founder and owner/operator of JIPE TREKKING & SAFARIS, chef, social activist, environmentalist, ornithologist and father to his one child at his home region of Kilimanjaro Mwanga district Tanzania. He is working hard to improve the quality of life for his fellow Tanzanians and that of the environment in which we all share.
Francis's cultural tours serve as an alternative choice to traditional park safaris while still incorporating popular game viewing attractions. His main focus is to promote cultural sensitivity, environmental education and social responsibility, while providing the opportunity to visit natural sites and learn about local culture and traditions. In addition to this, Francis offers the opportunity to participate in village home stays, allowing tourists to experience village life in rural and remote parts of Tanzania.
Francis joined himself in the tourism industry in the mid-ninety’s started as a Kilimanjaro potter and now safari organizer/operator. He has a lot of experiences on adventure, culture and environmental, he operates in all areas of Tanzania however primary functions currently exist in four main areas:
(1) Moshi which is Located on the foothill of Mt, Kilimanjaro with an altitude ranging from 800m to 5895m above sea level. Also in the surrounding areas are Mwanga and Same which is the home to the unique Nyumba ya Mungu Lake {house of god}, Lake Jipe, Lake Chala {Crater Lake}, Mkomazi national park and the Pare Mountains.
(2) Arusha and surrounding game parks including the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara National Park, Tarangire, Arusha national park and of course Lake Eyasi for Hadzabe bushmen.
(3) Dar es –Salaam
{4}Zanzibar.
Francis's tours advocate and practice social interactions between visitors and villagers by enabling the tourists to interact and mix freely with the people in their villages, eating and drinking together local foods, drinks, educational programmes with overnights in the family local huts, joining in ceremonial local dances, rituals, daily family chores- cooking, fetching water, fetching firewood, herding cows, Farming watering and traditional honey harvesting.
Eco-cultural tours are structured in such a way that positive social and environmental impact is achieved. Furthermore he aims to re-establish natural areas and further provide our visitors with information to help preserve and protect these areas for generations to come. This process is facilitated through experience and in-depth knowledge of the indigenous wildlife and landforms that exist in these areas. Parts of the profits generated through his tours are distributed among local residents to improve their economic power through the hiring and buying of local staff, local language teaching exchange programmes e.g. Kiswahili learning for visitors, funding initiatives, and re-investing into the organization to develop and maintain the programs.
AboutTanzania
Tanzania is a land of contrasts. From the snow-capped peak of Mt Kilimanjaro to the endless plains of the Serengeti, from the sun-kissed islands of the Zanzibar Archipelago to the gentle shores of Lake Victoria, the country contains immense cultural and natural wealth. It was here on the dusty floor of Olduvai Gorge, that early man left his first footprints. It was here, on palm-fringed Zanzibar, that Swahili traders welcomed dhows and trading boats from across the Indian Ocean.

Mount Kilimanjaro National Park
Most reasonably, fit and properly guided climbers can experience the triumph of reaching the crater rim with little more than a walking stick, warm clothing and determination. Those who reach, Uhuru Point, the actual summit, or Gillman's point on the lip of the crater Kilimanjaro is a dormant, but none extinct, volcano), will have earned their climbing certificates and their memories.
There is however so much more to Kilimanjaro than the summit. A journey up the slopes takes visitors on a climatic world tour, from the tropics to the artic. The grassy and cultivated lower slopes turn into lush rainforest, inhabited by elusive elephant, leopard, buffalo and antelope. Higher still, heath and moorland, covered with giant heathers, becomes a surreal alpine desert and finally there is ice, snow and the biggest view on the continent.
December to February are the warmest and cleanest months to visit, with July to September being colder but also dry, it is wet in the rainforest from April to June and during November

Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro - Marangu Route - Day 1
Rainforest on Kilimanjaro, Day 1 of the Marangu Route
Day 1 of the Marangu Route - Rainforest
Your first day on Kilimanjaro starts with the transfer from your hotel to Marangu gate, the registration formalities, an introduction to your guides, the packing of all equipment and distributing it among the porters... Expect to linger at the gate for an hour or two before you get going.
The first day on the Marangu Route leads through rain forest. (You know why it's called rain forest, right? ALWAYS carry your rain gear in your day pack!)
Actually, montane forest is the correct name for this climate zone and vegetation. The wide and well formed gravel path is fairly steep and leads steadily uphill, but the forest is so pretty that you don't mind.
For a while the path follows a little stream and it passes a couple of picturesque little waterfalls. You'll probably have lunch at the Kisamboni picnic area, which marks half way. It should take about an hour and a half to get here.
And it is about another hour and a half from here to the Mandara Huts. As you near the huts you will notice the vegetation change. You are about to enter the next climate and vegetation zone—the alpine heath and moorland. The first heathers appear, but most noticeable is the lichen dangling from all the trees and shrubs, leading to the name "bearded forest" that you may have seen under some Kilimanjaro pictures.
Soon you'll arrive at the Mandara Huts, a group of wooden huts in a forest clearing. If you do have time and energy left you can take a little side trip to the Maundi Crater. It takes about 15 minutes and, weather permitting; you will be rewarded with good views to Mawenzi.
You may also spot blue monkeys (they have become very used to people), and with a bit of luck even black and white colobus monkeys.
Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro - Marangu Route - Day 2
Horombo Huts and Kilimanjaro, Day 2 of the Marangu Route
Day 2 of the Marangu Route - Horombo Huts
First thing in the morning you will walk through a patch of forest. If you did not make the detour to Maundi Crater yesterday you now have another chance of spotting colobus monkeys. However, soon you will leave the last trees behind. You are now walking through moorland and the dominating plant is heather.
That means that, weather permitting; you should get good views of Kibo and Mawenzi. Some people describe the vegetation as bleak or boring as compared to the forest, but I actually prefer the more open views.
The most noticeable features, apart from the Kilimanjaro peaks of course, are the first giant senecios and loblelias that you can see growing among the ubiquitous heather.
The path meanders through the hills with some ups and downs and across a few dry creeks.
This is a long day. You will be covering quite some distance and altitude and you may start to feel the latter. Remember to drink plenty, and try to eat well, even if you don't feel like it.
From your lunch stop it is about another hour and a half to the Horombo Huts. (But don't feel pressured into making it in that time. It takes as long as it takes!)
You are quite high now and it will be bitter cold at night!
The Horombo Huts are in a scenic location with good views to Mawenzi. On clear days you may even be able to see Moshi way below you, as well as the Pare mountain range.
The Horombo Huts are by far the busiest place on Kilimanjaro, not just on the Marangu Route but on the whole mountain.
People who climb Kilimanjaro via the Marangu route stay here on the way up, on the way down, and if they take an extra acclimatization day they will spend another night at Horombo.
And as if that wasn't enough, climbers ascending via the Rongai route also descend via Marangu and will also spend a night at Horombo. (At least they have their own camping equipment and won't eat or sleep in the village of huts.)
Marangu Route - Optional Acclimatization Day
If you choose to climb Kilimanjaro on the Marangu route, please do add this optional acclimatization day to your schedule. Remember, Marangu is the route with the lowest success rate. The acclimatization day will increase your chances to reach the summit.
Today you can walk to an altitude of about 4500 m/14760 ft (or less), and then back to Horombo. Don't worry, you won't be doing the same trek twice. This hike is on an alternate path to the one you'll be taking tomorrow, and it is a more attractive one as well!
Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro - Marangu Route - Day 3
The Saddle of Kilimanjaro, Day 3 of the Marangu Route
Day 3 of the Marangu Route - The Saddle
Whether you took the acclimatization day or not, hopefully you wake up without any symptoms of altitude sickness and feeling refreshed. Because another big day lies ahead of you.
As you keep trudging uphill the vegetation is gradually thinning out. You will be passing several water streams and they do not necessarily look inviting. Nevertheless, soon you'll reach the signposted "Last Water Point" at 4200 m/13780 ft. It is indeed the last chance to collect water, and your porters will. (You might sit down at the picnic tables here and have a break.)
Eventually—after having crossed a ridge and another ridge and another ridge to get here—the path leads uphill onto the "saddle". This is the barren plain of alpine desert between the two main peaks of Kilimanjaro: Mawenzi and Kibo. The only living things left are some hardy grasses and the occasional everlasting flower. (How DO they do it? Blooming in this environment...)
After lunch it's an easy two hour stroll for some, for others it's a longer trudge across this bolder strewn plain, on a path that gets steeper and steeper, to the Kibo Huts, which do not seem to come any closer...
If you feel the altitude you will be surprised at how hard this is. The path doesn't LOOK steep, and it isn't (except maybe for the very last section), but the lack of oxygen turns the hike into a major effort.
The landscape can be quite dramatic, open and windswept, with big clouds rolling across it... Many people really enjoy this part. But it all depends how well acclimatized you are.
You will be looking at Kibo the whole time, and you will be having a good view of the challenge that lies ahead for you tonight...
Jipe straddling Tanzania and Kenya
Lake Jipe not many Tanzanians know of its existence or location. Sandwiched between the Pare mountains and Kilimanjaro this small lake {30 km sq} straddles the border between Kenya and Tanzania. This lake has a many water birds and is one of the few places in East Africa that the Lesser Jacana and Purple Gallinule are common. Also Madagascar Squacco Herron, Black Herron, African Darter and African Skimmer are often seen here.
Other wildlife seen here are Hippopotamus, Otters, crocodiles, waterbucks and elephants. The northern half of the lake is in Kenya in the Tsavo West National Park. Tsavo West is famed for its huge elephant population? You stand a good chance of spotting an elephant in this unusual and very off the beaten track excursion.
The best way to experience the lake and the wildlife is to take a local canoe. These wooden canoes sit three people and a young Pare man

This district is famous for its dam which is named "Nyumba ya Mungu" House of God
If you are climbing Kilmanjaro and have a day to spare this lake is worth a trip to interact with the local community and see something not many tourists get to see. You also get a small excision into Kenya. Jipe Trekking & safaris? http://jipetrekkingsafaris.blogspot.com is a nonprofit organization. We are using tourism to improve lives. ECOTOURISM- DAY TRIPS
During our Eco-cultural tours
These tours are traveled to very remote areas from the nearest Tanzania towns, in Moshi. Water, bread and jam/butter are brought up from the town. However we encourage our clients to buy local products such as eggs and vegetables from the local people to help boost their income. Traditional meals which would include a meat stew, rice, potatoes, cabbage, tomatoes, avocados, beans, Chapati, ugali (stiff corn porridge), roast bananas and sweet bananas and oranges to finish can be provided by a local family.
At the villages the guides would provide food and hot water for you. There is no electricity but the guides will provide firewood’s or kerosene lamps to boil water (very romantic!).

Why us!!
Our teams of tour guides who left their tour escort positions with tour companies use their travel industry connections and experience to become freelance guides. Tour companies often need guides with expertise in certain areas to guide their less frequent tours, especially if the company is small or doesn't visit the area regularly. Our independent guides are usually paid by the day, make more money than salaried guides, and can pretty much set their own work schedules, taking time off whenever they feel like it. usually specialize in all tours, guiding the tours according to our tour company's instructions, but using our local knowledge and expertise. We are independent eventually functioning almost as our own tour company, arranging our own tours, setting up accommodations, and finding customers to take the trips, often in collaboration with a travel agency. This offers a great opportunity for the entrepreneurial-minded by giving the tour guide a percentage of the profits from the tour, and is often the first step toward establishment of a true tour company.Although this arrangement is fine for the more experienced guides who can easily find work, it makes finding a position more difficult for someone just breaking into the business, since our company usually hire freelancers who have some proven experience.

Travel tips, Safari and information about Tanzania
Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA).
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area
(NCA) was established in 1959, and is located 156 kilometers west of Arusha. Ngorongoro Crater is within NCA. The NCA is not a National Park, it is a Protected Area. "Protected areas" means areas entrance allowed by permit only including National Parks, Game Reserves and Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) covers some 8300 square kilometers. It boasts of the finest blend of Mountains landscapes shaped by rifts and volcanoes, wildlife, people and archaeological sites in Africa. The concept of multiple land use in a Conservation perspective is a deviation from a Traditional approach (National Parks & Game Reserves) of regarding conservation as complete absenteeism of human Interference.
It becomes one of the first Program in the World to pioneering experiment in multiple land use for the benefits of both Maasai people and Wildlife in Natural traditional setting. The multiple land use philosophy in the area is to maintain the co-existence of human (with social and economic factors) and Wildlife in a natural tradition setting. Pastoralism, conservation of natural resources and Tourism are the three Components that are considered to be compatible in the area. NCA is often called ‘African Eden’ and the ‘Eight Wonder of the Natural World’. Traditional African pastoralists Co-operate with Tanzania’s government bodies to help preserve the natural resources of the area and to ensure a fantastic experience for Tourists. NCA has more intrinsic and aesthetic values than what is needed by Tourists. One Researcher said “They can not know that they need it until they have it” It means unless you visit NCA, you can’t know its beauty and marvels. It has more diversity and stunning features than any protected area (National Park, Game Reserve) in the World.
Ngorongoro is the World Heritage Site and has also been declared an International Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. This is due to its outstanding Wildlife and Cultural values.
NCA has many Fascinating featuresexplains to you in detail 2 most outstanding among other features. (i) NGORONGORO CRATER (ii) OLDUVAI GORGE.
(i) NGORONGORO CRATER.
Ngorongoro is the largest/huge unbroken caldera in the World. It is also known as collapsed volcano, this natural amphitheatre have 250 square kilometers and 23 km wide. The Crater has very steep walls of an average depth of 600 meters. It’s at the altitude of 2,286 m above sea level. The crater alone has over 20,000 large animals (half of them zebra & wildebeest). This includes some of Tanzania’s last remaining black rhino. Animals are free to leave or enter the crater but most of them stay because of the plentiful water and food available in the crater floor throughout the year. There are also gazelle, buffalo, eland, hartebeest and warthog. Such vast numbers attract predators a plenty, mainly lion and hyena but also cheetah and leopard. More than 100 species of birds not found in the Serengeti have been spotted here. Countless flamingos form a pink blanket over the soda lakes. For the best viewing and photography, approach the animals slowly and quietly and stay on the official tracks. Our Driver Guide will show you the Best of Game viewing.
(ii) OLDUPAI (OLDUVAI) GORGE;
It was here that Dr. Louis Leakey discovered the remains of Homo hablis or “handy man” regarded as mankind’s first step on the ladder of human evolution. Humans have being part of the Ngorongoro’s landscape for millions of years. The earliest sign of mankind in the conservation area is at LAETOLI, where hominid foot prints are preserved in volcanic rock 3,600,000 years old. The story continues at Olduvai (Olduvai) Gorge a river canyon cut 100 meters deep through the volcanic soils of the Serengeti plains. Buried in the layers are the remains of animals and hominids that lived and died around a shallow lake amid grass plains and woodlands, from 2,000,000 years ago to the present. The four different kinds of hominids found there show a gradual increase in brain size and in the complexity of their stone tools. But many more fossils have been discovered here including those of prehistoric elephants, giant horned sheep and enormous ostriches. Visitors can learn more details of this fascinating story by visiting the gorge where guides will give on site interpretation of the gorge. Oldupai Museum at the gorge is also very useful for information and education.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) has a number of other stunning features. These are shifting sands, Nasera Rock, Olkarien Gorge, Empakai Crater, Olmoti Crater, Active Oldonyo Lengai, Grassland, Lake Makat, Swamps, Lerai Forest; Acacia Woodlands and Complex Forests.
SHIFTING SANDS, North of Oldupai Gorge- a little black sand dune marches across the plains, covering 17 metres a year. Blown by a Strong steady wind it somehow maintains its size and somehow maintains its size and elegant shape.
GEOLOGY. Most of Rocks here are of Volcanic origin.
PEOPLE AND LIVESTOCK. In the past few thousands of years, a succession of cattle herding people colonized this area from the North. The most numerous and recent are the Maasai who arrived about 200 years ago. Their strong insistence on their Traditional custom and costume interests many visitors. Today there is over 42,000 Maasai pastoralists living in the area with their cattle, goats and sheep Visitors are welcome to learn about the culture of the Maasai and buy their handcrafts only in designated bomas commonly known as “Cultural Bomas”. Apart from commonly Wildlife Safaris, Mount Kilimanjaro and Meru climbing, game viewing Adventures and Beach Holidays, one can plan this extra ordinary adventure in lifetime. This extra ordinary Adventure is walking in the Ngorongoro. Walking in the Ngorongoro Wilderness is both adventurous and rewarding. Great opportunities are now available for long walking Safaris and short hikes. Enquiries are invited for walking from Olmoti areas where Visitors could walk includes the Northern Highland Forest reserve, the Eastern Serengeti plains that are Nasera Rock, Gol Mountains and Olkarien Gorge.
There are different detailed itineraries for Walking Safaris to the following points. Oldonyo Lengai Oldoinyo Lengai is the only active Sodium Carbonite Volcano in the world. This trip will take you to LakeNatron to view the flamingo breeding centre as well as taking you to the summit of this amazing volcano. This trip is 4 days long and is perfect to take either before or after a Kilimanjaro Climb. Lake Natron Flamingos breeding in the harsh soda lake conditions. Encircled by the Great Rift walls broken by the beautiful gorge of the Engaresero River. Ngorongoro Highland Trekking The Ngorongoro Highland Trek is a full on walking safari adventure. This 10 day trip takes you hiking round Ngorongoro crater and the surrounding area and also includes a climb of Oldoinyo Lengai. Ngorongoro Crater Trek The Ngorongoro Crater Trek is the baby brother of the Ngorongoro Highland trek. It is a 7 day adventure which covers slightly less ground than the Highland trek but also includes a climb of Oldonyo Lengai. Perfect as and on to a Kilimanjaro Climb. This is just few to mention but when you arrive in Ngorongoro Conservation area, you won’t be exhausted. There are so many places to Visit. There is unlimited information and we have revealed this Piece of Information to the public so that to awake the Spirit of Searching more about Ngorongoro Crater. Lemosho Route ( 7 nights 8 Days) Camping
For the first day we will leave the hotel early in the morning and drive to Londorosi Gate for registration. We will then drive to Lemosho Glades (2100m) where we will start the 4-5 hour trek through the unspoiled rainforest to Big Tree camp (2800m) where we’ll have dinner and stay overnight.
Day 2
Today the trek will take 6-7 hours with a gain of altitude of approximately 800m. Lunch will be served within an exciting valley just outside the Shira crater at 3100m. After lunch we’ll go across the rim into the Shira Caldera which filled from lava from Kibo. We will camp and have dinner at Shira One camp (3600m).
Day 3
Today we have a 4-5 hour walk east across the Shira Plateau. This brings use to Shira Two camp via Shira Cathedral at 3880m. Shira Two is at a height of around 3850m where we will camp and have dinner.
Day 4
Today consists of going over a ridge at 4440m or 4600m over the Lava Tower which offers invaluable altitude acclimatization. From here we have a further 5-6 hour trek as we drop down though the Barranco Valley to the camp beside Barranco Wall at 3900m where we will camp and have dinner. The walk today takes between 8-10 hours.
Day 5
After an early breakfast, we will start by climbing up Barranco Wall which gives us an altitude gain of 300m. We continue our trek for 5-6 hours, crossing ridges and valleys to Karanga camp (3900m) where we will have our lunch. In the afternoon we will have an optional altitude acclimatizing trek up the scree slopes towards the Southern Ice Fields.
Day 6
After breakfast we will have about 2-4 hours trekking to an altitude of 4600m. At the camp we can either take an afternoon rest or acclimatization until midnight when our trek to the summit will commence.
Day 7
We rise very early at around midnight to start the ascent up to the crater rim through the scree slopes to Stella Point, then to the highest point in Africa, Uhuru Peak. Stella Point is located at 5750m around the crater rim which is reached after dawn. It is worth wearing several layers of thermal clothes before starting the trek to the summit. After enjoying the amazing views on Kilimanjaro’s summit, we will trek downwards via Stella Point and the scree slopes back to Barafu camp for some hours rest before heading to Millennium camp located at 3750m. This is the hardest day for the trekkers to have ever experienced, which involves ascents and descents taking around 13-15 hours. We will camp and have dinner at Millennium camp.
Day 8
We leave the camp early in the morning and trek downwards to Mweka Gate via Mweka camp (3100m). The path from Millennium camp takes us through where heather grows, and the path is dusty. It takes about an hour to Mweka camp. The dusty path continues for some time before entering a heavy rainforest that takes us to the gate where we will have a picnic lunch, certificate presentation and photos before heading to the hotel where you will have dinner and stay overnight. It will take us 4-5 hours from Mweka camp to Mweka Gate (1500m).
